Building our Chicken Coop the Off-Grid Way

One of the latest projects at The Off-Grid Answer has been building our chicken coop, and true to form, we did it with a healthy mix of salvaged materials, determination, and making things up as we went.

The coop’s frame was built from trees that once lined our driveway. Instead of turning them into firewood, we repurposed them into a future home for our anticipated chickens.

The chicken wire fencing came with a story of its own. The chicken wire was rescued from a farm where we also saved our cat, Skittles.

There’s still work to do, but it’s starting to look like an actual chicken coop. The future residents haven’t moved in yet, but we’re pretty sure they’ll appreciate the custom-built accommodations.

Like many projects around here, it’s another example of finding new uses for old materials, keeping things out of the landfill, and proving that with enough creativity, and patience to untangle chicken wire balls almost anything can have a second life.

We’ll share more updates as the coop comes together and when the day old chicks arrive.
